Windham Takes off Early and Wins Third Race of the Season
Stewart Ties McGrath on All-Time 125cc Wins Record With Impressive Victory

Honda’s Kevin Windham, of Centerville, Miss., won his third THQ World Supercross GP/THQ AMA Supercross Series race of the season at the Metrodome. Kawasaki’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., earned his second THQ AMA Supercross Series Eastern Regional race win, tying Jeremy McGrath on the all-time 125cc supercross win list record with 13.

Kawasaki’s Michael Byrne, of Temecula, Calif., won the $1,500 Butterfinger Holeshot Award in the 250cc main event, his first of the season. Andrew Short, of Colorado Springs, Colo., pushed his Suzuki past Byrne and in to the lead on lap one. On the same lap, Windham moved into the lead. Chad Reed, who is leading the series in points, started fifth and made his way into second place on lap five. Reed charged late in the race and moved within :02 of Windham. Vuillemin finished third.

“I wanted to get in the lead early and check out,” said Windham. “I knew what I had to do tonight to win and I did. I knew where Chad (Reed) was at the whole time. I am really enjoying racing now that I am back.”

Yamaha’s Kelly Smith, of Ludington, Mich., earned the $1,000 Butterfinger Holeshot Award in the 125cc main event, leading the field of 22 riders through turn one. Stewart, who won the opening round of Eastern regional competition last weekend in Houston, started mid-pack but moved his way into the lead on lap two, passing Yamaha’s Josh Hansen and holding on for the win.

“It felt great out here tonight,” said Stewart. “This is my first time in Minneapolis, so I wanted to give the fans a great show. Next year I will be on a 250cc here.”
