Honda’s Mike LaRocco, of South
Bend, Ind., won his first THQ AMA Supercross Series
since January 19, 2002 tonight at the RCA Dome before
46,931 screaming fans.
Yamaha’s Joshua Hansen, of
Elbert, Colo., won his first AMA THQ 125 Eastern
Regional Supercross of his career. James
Stewart skipped the evening racing program after
suffering a concussion from a crash in afternoon
practice.
In the 250 Main Event, Honda’s
Mike LaRocco, of South Bend, Ind., earned the $1,500
Holeshot Award to a standing ovation from the home
state crowd. Yamaha’s David Vuillemin, of Murrietta,
Calif., and Suzuki’s Nick Wey, of Dewitt, Mich.,
followed in second and third respectively.
Points leader, Yamaha’s Chad
Reed, of Dade City, Fla. crashed at the first turn to
start out in last place. Honda’s Kevin Windham, of
Centreville, Miss., started in fourth place and moved
into second passing Vuillemin on lap 15. Reed pushed
his way through the field and moved into third on the
16th lap of the race and started closing in on
Windham. LaRocco led the entire race to win and
teammate Windham held off Reed for a second place
finish.
“It was one of the greatest
races I’ve ever been in,” said LaRocco. “And it is
all thanks to you fans,” as he pointed to the cheering
fans. "I had an awesome start and the fans kept it
going the whole time.”
In the 125 Main Event, Hansen,
who finished third in his heat race, was the $1,000
Butterfinger Holeshot Award winner. Kawasaki’s Paul
Carpenter, of Ithaca, N.Y., trailed close behind
throughout the race, but Hansen pulled away in lap
seven when Carpenter slid out in one of the turns.
Carpenter held onto second, marking his top finish of
the season. Yamaha’s Danny Smith, of Middleton,
Idaho, finished third, posting his first podium finish
of the year.
Kawasaki’s James Stewart, of
Haines City, Fla., the AMA THQ 125 Eastern Regional
Supercross Series Champion, was unable to compete in
tonight’s racing due to a concussion sustained in a
crash during practice earlier in the day.
“I felt a little tight tonight,”
stated Hansen. “But, I got first, so I can’t
complain. I am just really happy and hopefully, I can
keep it going.” |
